GWUOHS Parent Newsletter August 2015

A Message from our Head of School

By Staci Kimmons

Dear GWUOHS Families,

How to Have a Successful School Year:

  1. Pace Yourself– Each day your calendar tells you exactly which lessons/ assessments you should complete. Make sure you follow this calendar closely. In the event that you will miss school due to travel, competitions, etc, plan to work ahead. It is easy to get behind and very hard to get caught up. GWUOHS has very stringent guidelines for requesting extensions (see the parent/ student handbook). Extensions will not be granted for reasons other than those noted.
  2. Communicate– Your advisor will schedule weekly meetings with you to discuss your academic progress. Be sure to engage with your advisor for these meetings to celebrate your successes to get additional support. Your advisor is one of your biggest advocates at GWUOHS.
  3. Ask for Help– Our teachers are eager to help you to be successful. In addition to your class connect sessions, each teacher offers multiple Help Desk sessions each week. This is an opportunity to get individual and small group support. You can also schedule individual appointments with your teacher.
  4. Attend your classes– Class Connect sessions are designed to extend the learning opportunities provided in your lessons. It is important that students take advantage of these weekly sessions. For high school students attendance at Class Connect sessions is required and constitutes ten percent of your course grade. If you are unable to attend your class connect sessions, be sure to watch the recordings.
  5. Stay Connected– Check your k-mail at least twice per day. Important information is shared with you via this internal communication system.

Spring Break Trip 2016

Our school mission emphasized the need for our students to be global citizens. Recently, ten GWUOHS students traveled to Ireland, Scotland and England for our annual Spring Break Trip. Among the many exciting experiences, student had the opportunity to tour Trinity College, the Edinburgh Castle, to visit Blarney Castle, and to go atop the Eye of London. It is experiences like these that set GWUOHS apart from other online schools.

The destination for our 2016 Spring Break Tour has been revealed! We will be traveling to Paris and the Riviera. Highlights of this our include a tour of the Palace of Versailles, a visit to the Eiffel Tower, a visit to the Louvre, as well as travel throughout Provence, Nice, Cassis, Cinque Terre, and Milan. We still have spots remaining! To learn more about this opportunity or to enroll for the tour, please click HERE.

College Acceptances

The following is a listing of the institutions to which GWUOHS graduates have been accepted from 2012 – 2015. Click here to see a PDF version of the list of college acceptances.

There is a good reason they call these ceremonies ‘ commencement exercises’. Graduation is not the end; it’s the beginning.
